How Common is Angina

Angina is a common condition, affecting around one in fifty people in the UK.1 Altogether about two million people over thirty-five have angina, which is comprised of 1.1 million men over thirty-five, and around 850,000 women over thirty-five.3

Of all the types of angina, stable angina is the most common and the most easily treated. Unstable angina is less common and is usually a progression from stable angina. It may also be an indication that coronary heart disease is worsening. Variant angina is the rarest of the three types, occurring in only around two in every hundred angina cases in the UK.5 Age is less of a factor with variant angina - people with this type are often younger than those with stable or unstable angina.

Elsewhere in the world where studies on heart-related conditions have been conducted, angina statistics are fairly comparable to the UK. For example in the U.S., it is estimated that three out of every hundred people, suffers from angina 8 and that coronary heart disease was the cause of 445,687 deaths in 2005.8

Generally, the number of people living with angina is rising each year. In the UK, around 52,000 new cases of angina are reported in men each year, and about 43,000 in women, giving a total of about 96,000 new angina cases each year.7 In correlation with this statistic, the number of people who suffer from obesity and diabetes is also rising. These two conditions are two of the major causes of coronary heart disease and angina.

Studies of heart conditions in the US conclude that your chances of having angina depend primarily on your age, sex, and ethnic background, and secondarily on your lifestyle.9 Specifically, the group of people most likely to develop stable and unstable angina are men aged between seventy-four and eighty-four years old. If you’re in this group and have other pre-existing conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, or pulmonary hypertension, your risk of the condition is further increased.
