There are two main types of stroke and each one has
a different cause.
An ‘ischaemic stroke’ happens when the oxygen-rich
blood supply to the brain is interrupted, usually when
an artery becomes narrowed by fatty deposits within
its walls or blocked by a blood clot.
A ‘haemorrhagic stroke’ happens when there
is bleeding into or around the brain tissues, which
usually happens if a small artery bursts after it has
been put under extra strain by high blood pressure.
The bleeding damages the delicate tissues of the brain,
and other tissues are starved of oxygen.
