Servier Announce £132/€185 Million Irish Manufacturing Investment and New Research Partnership
27/10/2006
London, 27 October 2006: Servier, the leading French independent research based pharmaceutical group and Mr Michael Martin, the Irish Enterprise, Trade and Employment Minister, today announced the creation of a new pharmaceutical manufacturing facility at Waterford and increased capacity at the existing facility in Arklow. This investment package, worth up to £132/€185 million, is expected to create around 200 new jobs over the next five to seven years.
At the same time, Servier announced the details of research partnerships between Servier and University College, Dublin across all their common fields of medical research.
Commenting on the new Irish investment package company founder and President Dr Jacques Servier said:
“Our many worldwide clients do not wish to depend on a single manufacturing facility and thus run a risk of lacking in medicinal products. The new manufacturing facility for active substances will be able to back up Bolbec in France if for any reason it could not manufacture some specialties. The marvellous administration and quite extraordinary success of the country have made it rise quickly up the ranks of European nations. I should also point out the quality of the Irish workforce which is talented, capable and loyal.”
The New Waterford Facility
From 2010 onwards, the Waterford facility will manufacture two new active substances resulting from Servier Research (Agomelatine and Terutroban), along with the active substances, Perindopril Arginine and Ivabradine. The cost of the first section of the Waterford project will amount to £32/€45 million. Thereafter, another production unit focusing on Strontium Ranelate is scheduled. The overall investment will amount to £78.5/€100-£82/€115 million over the next seven years with some 155 employees hired at the site.
Along with production, the Waterford site will also carry out some of the Group’s research and development activities, making it necessary to recruit highly qualified staff.
Servier Production in Arklow
Servier has also announced an increase in medication manufacturing capacity at its other Irish facility in Arklow. Fifteen pharmaceutical products are manufactured in Arklow for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and in the future, for depression. The extension should ensure overall production capacity of 140 million boxes from 2010 onwards. The projected cost of the extension programme amounts to £50/€70 million. Some 140 new staff are scheduled to be hired as part of the extension programme over the next 5 years, bringing the overall staff level to 350 people by 2010.
Servier Research Partnerships
In parallel with the two major industrial investment announcements in Ireland, Servier executives and the directors of University College Dublin (UCD) presented the details of the research partnerships between their teams in all medication research fields (molecular pathology, structural biology, formulation research, pharmacology, clinical research, biomathematics, bioinformatics, toxicology and proteomics).
The “Doctor Jacques Servier” Award
Servier executives also took the opportunity to officially award the “Doctor Jacques Servier” scholarship to the prize-winner, Dr. Marc Devocelle, at the French Embassy in Dublin on the 26th October, in the presence of the Ambassador of France in Ireland and the Ambassador of Ireland in France. The annual “Doctor Jacques Servier” scholarship was created at the initiative of the Servier Institute and the Ireland Fund of France, to promote scientific exchanges between the medical community, health industry, universities and research bodies in Ireland. Dr. Devocelle, of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland was awarded the prize for his work in the development of molecules for the prevention of cardiovascular disease (anti-thrombotics) and his research collaborations between Ireland and France.
